Protecting the White Ibises

Australian White Ibis
Australian White Ibis
The research says that White Ibises are in trouble. While some might consider them a probelm in metropolitan areas, culling them could drive them to extinction.

Like some other areas in Sydney, a colony of white ibises has developed in Marrickville. A large number of these native birds live on palm trees near St Brigid's Church on Marrickville Road.

According to animal experts, as a result of drought and other environmental stresses on the natural habitat of these birds in NSW, they have resorted to moving to cities along the east coast.  They generally stay in areas near water. The numbers of these native birds have decreased to such an extent that they are close to becoming an endangered species.

While there may be a need to control the White Ibis population in Marrickville, we need to look at all the available options including relocation near the Cooks River.

Action:

is important to study the migration of white ibises to Marrickville and other city areas.

For a start, Saeed is asking for a council report to explore:

-         Estimated white ibis population in the area and future trends

-         Measures undertaken by other councils (e.g. Fairfield) so far to address issues relating to large nuber of Ibis population

-         Possible options to deal with related issues without further endangering the native white Ibis population in NSW
