Federal Labor & Coalition fail to support Greens amendment to limit Airport DevelopmentsOn March 27 Federal Labor Senators voted alongside their Liberal colleagues to defeat an amendment put by Tasmanian Greens Senator, Christine Milne that would have required non-aviation airport developments to comply with state and local planning controls. “The decision by Federal Labor not to support a Greens amendment intended to make the Sydney Airport Corporation Limited (SACL) and other airports comply with state & local planning laws, exposes the credibility of federal member for Grayndler, Anthony Albanese, who has so often cried foul about the airport’s development and expansion,” Marrickville Greens Councillor, Saeed Khan, said. “Federal Labor has sided with John Howard as he continues to allow SACL to expand “The ability of the (SACL) to avoid state and local planning laws has been consistently opposed by Marrickville Council.” “Both the NSW Government and the LGSA have called for SACL to be brought into line. The Iemma Government must be sorely disappointed that its federal Labor colleagues have failed to vote for these measures intended to stop SACL opting out of its responsibility to the surrounding community. “Responsibility for impacts on the community should be a cornerstone of planning at all levels of government. Even if the airport is on federal land it should not be able avoid that responsibility and should be subject to state and local planning laws like everyone else.” he said.
